Argentinean artist Santiago Cucullu's chaotic cut-out vinyl works dominate gallery walls and museum hallways wherever they're shown. At one of Perry Rubenstein's two small 24th Street locations, Cucullu exhibits two new monochrome vinyl works, created by manipulating found images of curbside furniture and alleys in Milwaukee into a single mass. Just down the block at 534 24th Street, Cucullu presents an entirely different series of watercolors, replacing the hard edges of his vinyl works with the soft bleed of pale-colored shapes. The richly detailed paintings come not from the street, but from the mind, echoing not only Paul Klee's imaginative works, but the emotive revulsion to city life found in paintings by fin-de-siècle expressionists.
