Chicago-based photographer Dawoud Bey's series Class Pictures depicts teenagers from a high school on Chicago's South Side, a New England prep school, and classrooms in Orlando, Detroit, and San Francisco. Bey's portraits place the sitter squarely in the center of the frame, staring right into the camera's lens. The large prints are accompanied by short, biographical texts written by the subjects; some are already parents themselves, many are wracked with adolescent anxieties, and all of them have interesting life stories. Bey's photographs are intimate encounters, bringing out the adult in their 17-year-old subjects.
