The venerable Paula Cooper hosts a miniretrospective of Hans Haacke. Haacke was an early practitioner of "institutional critique," an offshoot of conceptual art that applied analytical and sociological methods to cultural institutions. At the entrance is his earliest work, photographs of Germans at documenta 2 in 1959 encountering modern art, many for the first time. His most famous work, 1971's Manhattan Real Estate Holdings, documents shadowy surrogate companies owned by Manhattan's largest landowners at the time, Sol Goldberg and Alex DiLorenzo — which prompted the Guggenheim to cancel the show amid a storm of controversy. And in the main gallery, four electric fans blow an enormous white sheet in Wide White Flow, an investigation of matter and energy.
