Art Katy Grannan: Lady into Fox

Katy Grannan's series Lady into Fox at Salon 94 Freemans depicts a pair of middle-aged transsexuals, Gail and Dale, living their lives as females on the sun-drenched California coastline. Though it's unclear whether or not Grannan casts a skeptical eye on their performative lifestyle, her images are deeply sympathetic. Lady is a three-part exhibition with San Francisco's Fraenkel Gallery and Midtown's Greenberg Van Doren Gallery. At GVD, Grannan's Another Woman Who Died in Her Sleep stars Nicole, whose persona shifts through a series of unnerving pictures. In a variety of wigs and costumes (or no clothes at all), Nicole poses without inhibition, yielding a portrait of raw existential anguish.
