Abigail Washburn has one killer set of pipes. Unlike most other contemporary female folk singers who tend to go for the wounded bird sound, Washburn belts out her tunes with such soul you'd think she was in a gospel choir on Sunday morning. Occasionally singing in Mandarin, Washburn has appointed herself musical ambassador, bringing traditional American songs to Chinese audiences (she's toured Mainland China several times in recent years) and traditional Chinese melodies to American audiences, highlighting some striking similarities between the two cultures. More recently, she's solidified a backing band that includes her regular touring partner Ben Sollee on cello, Casey Driessen on fiddle, and none other than Béla Fleck on lead banjo.
