Composer Olivier Messiaen drew from Western classical traditions, but also subverted them, eschewing conventions of motion and development in favor of more complex rhythms and structures found in ancient Greek and Eastern music. His wanderlust brought him around the world, and he absorbed musical ideas from the places he visited — Indonesian gamelan, early electronic music, and Japanese music. In 1931, he was appointed the organist at the church of La Trinité in Paris, a position he held until his death in 1992. This year marks the centennial of his birth, and organist Gail Archer performs six of Messiaen's completed organ works on some of Manhattan's best church organs, starting tonight with "La Nativité du Seigneur" at the Church of the Heavenly Rest.
