Younger music fans aching for their own Last Waltz should head to Pianos tonight. The venue might lack the ambience (and turkey dinner) of the Band's famed final concert at the Winterland, but the Morning Pages do humbly and soulfully pick up where their predecessors left off. Combining honky tonk, roots rock, and folk, these five New Yorkers rock, roll, and wail more like scruffy Southern gentlemen than jaded Billyburg rawkers. Keep your fingers crossed for a guest appearance by fellow revivalists the Pierces; the sister psych-folk duo often joins the group onstage, playing the role of a next-gen Emmylou Harris. Hymns hit the stage in anticipation of their upcoming release Travel in Herds, which finds the quartet adding funky horns to their acclaimed Carolina porch-picking and California bliss-out melodies.
