French director Louise Malle's second feature, The Lovers (1958), launched a bona-fide US Supreme Court inquiry into the legal definition of obscenity. These days, the flick is worth seeing not because of its salacious content — most Sunday nights on HBO trump it — but because of Jeanne Moreau's tremendous performance. As a bored society wife conducting a bored affair with a Spanish aristocrat, she comes alive when she falls into bed with an archeology student. The pre-Graduate premise may sink in treacle from time to time, but the film is sustained by the Brahms soundtrack and a monochrome river of images that cast human passion against nature's wilder silence.
