Although photographer Irving Penn has worked in a variety of styles (including fashion spreads and early forays into painting), he is best known for iconic, black-and-white images of famous people. His prints depict intimately detailed figures in austere surroundings — from a close-up shot of a wrinkled Pablo Picasso to a sidelong look from a seated Jean Cocteau — and have included celebrities like Truman Capote, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Jorge Luis Borges. Close Encounters is a portrait of an iconic portrait-maker, highlighting 67 of Penn's most stunning profiles.
