If there's any '90s holdover that understands music's Darwinian undercurrent, it's Blonde Redhead: with each new record, the band strives to reinvent itself with a more relevant sound. Their roots bubble with sparse no-wave, but the group's 2007 release, 23, lobbed a parting shot across the ears of elitists — proving that it is possible to pack artistic weight and play pop. Louder in some places, softer in others, their revamped live show, meanwhile, gives these old indie dogs a chance to show off new tricks.
