Iran-born, US-educated photographer Shirin Neshat takes stirring, subversive pictures of Muslim women, forcefully engaging the troubling boundaries that separate men and women, Islam and secularism, faith and obedience. In her new work at Barbara Gladstone, Neshat returns to Shahrnush Parsipur's novel Women Without Men, which Neshat has interpreted into films and photographs over the last few years. Her mystical account of the Iranian Revolution depicts the tragic consequences for the country's women who try to reclaim their humanity.
