Music: Rock/Pop Mavis Staples

Renowned for her heart-wrenching rasp and unassailable take on Chicago soul, Mavis Staples was a Stax institution by the early '70s. Of course, even before joining the iconic label's roster (and being backed by members of Booker T. and the MGs), her family band, the Staple Singers, had already soundtracked a thousand civil rights walks, dropping deeply spiritual protest songs like "Long Walk to DC" and a landmark cover of Dylan's "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall." Staples' pipes remain pristine (if a bit deeper and mellower), and, with a new record now out on Anti-, she's stacking it up and breaking it down like never before.
