Reading Carl Wilson

Carl Wilson reads from Let's Talk About Love: A Journey to the End of Taste. Wilson's book uses Céline Dion's multi-platinum (and much-despised) Let's Talk About Love as a crowbar, and pries open the assumptions and prejudices that shape our tastes in the first place. The Canadian author calls for a 21st-century criticism — one rooted in compassion rather than elitist impulse, in gut feeling rather than cold, intellectual response. This new criticism would be "something like a tour of aesthetic experience, a travelogue, a memoir," which uses the culture as a means of helping us understand our neighbors and, finally, ourselves.
