If the so-called "garage-rock revival" had birthed more bands like SSM, the phrase wouldn't have become such a lazy insult to throw at less-than-inspiring ensembles. But for every hundred duds, there's one that steps outside the box and actually rocks out. SSM's gnarly power trio lifts the retro guitar riffs and sassy, come-hither yelps from '70s garage and adds fuzzed-out synths, frazzled dance beats, and spacey, circus-like atmospherics. They open tonight for the Von Bondies, who feature a number of new faces in the ranks.
