The Film Society of Lincoln Center says…

Few Americans really grasp the breadth of Russian film in existence: we tend to treat film imports from that country as jewels rarely produced. The truth, of course, is that Russia has been producing films for nearly as long as Hollywood has — albeit, given the fact that capitalism is a relatively recent phenomenon there, the films have typically proven radically less commercial, (mostly) to their credit. Lincoln Center's satisfyingly extensive program highlights the range of Russian filmic genres and styles, among them: Soviet musicals, "eastern" action thrillers set in Central Asia (don't miss Vladimir Motyl's White Sun of the Desert, 1969), and films from such masters as Akira Kurosawa, Larisa Shepitko, and Andrei Tarkovsky.
