Supplanting the narrow, pejorative connotations of "world music" with a universal message of hope, Ladysmith Black Mambazo's rotating cast of singers have stunned audiences of all persuasions for over 45 years — they even made a mainstream ripple at Paul Simon's behest. The South African a cappella troupe offers a polished take on isicathamiya and mbube vocal traditions, crafting dense pop arrangements that lose little in the way of authenticity. Detractors might cry "prefab," but with syrup-thick harmonies that float away like clouds, we could care less. Tonight, Ladysmith will make the Big Apple feel like Graceland.
