A guide, fully decked-out as Bach, leads tours of Leipzig. Two truck drivers bang out a melody. A subway car rings out with an impromptu performance by rows of traveling cellists. Leave it to Spanish surrealist Pere Portabella to give the oft-cinematically lifeless category of classical music a face-lift. With great mischief, sensuality, and even outright sexuality, Portabella combines elements of documentary, avant-garde cinema, and historical drama in these strangely stripped-down vignettes that carve out the power of composers like Bach, whose spare, lonely melodies elevate real life into something more palatable.
