2007 Venice Biennale standout El Anatsui draws on his Ghanaian heritage in this collection, forming bottle tops into a singularly pliable material for his drape-like, wall-mounted sculptures. Plot a Plan II evokes a Google Earth-style contour map of sparsely populated African towns, and Bleeding Takari II highlights regional political unrest. Anatsui shares an obvious urban influence with Mondrian, but the glimmering, pixel-like bottle caps' unexpected beauty pays homage to Klimt. Anatsui's undulating tapestries encourage both close inspection and distant observation to fully appreciate their immense, awe-inspiring compositions.
