Eccentric, turban-wearing organist Dr. Lonnie Smith has a joy for creating music unmatched in the jazz world. Smith began playing the Hammond B3 as soon as he was strong enough to drag what he calls the "425-pound beast" out of Art Kubera's music store in Buffalo, New York. He learned from Jimmy Smith and Bill Doggett records, and eventually collaborated with legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Joe Lovano. Now, some 70 albums later, Smith is considered a forefather of acid jazz. The master of the keys plays back-to-back sets at Iridium five nights in a row, touting his trio's warbling organs, mesmerizing drums, and tasty, tasteful electric guitar.
