Unlike the characters in most contemporary African literature familiar to the West, the affluent family in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's debut novel, Purple Hibiscus, suffers under its own internal oppression more than it does under any greater political strife. The Nigerian author's second book, Half of a Yellow Sun, takes on a more typical theme of civil war (in this case, the Biafran conflict in the late '60s), but the story is told with a touch of Adichie's unique sensuality. Dave Eggers' latest work is a semifictional biography of Sudanese refugee Valentino Achak Deng; the two are joined tonight by Abraham Awolich, co-director of the New Sudan Education Initiative.
