Today, the art of storytelling seems as quaint as silent film, a lumbering anachronism in a sea of ADD-paced narratives. Enter London-based troupe 1927, whose Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is a dark, titillating collection of tales of unforgiving oceans, dark forests, and gloomy suburbs accompanied by videos shot in pitch-perfect silent-film style. The group's marriage of live action, animation, film, and live piano music, elicits nostalgia for a glamorous bygone era while delivering a satire of contemporary society. There aren't enough words to describe 1927's devilishly macabre achievement, but its silent films speak for themselves.
