Kristin Scott Thomas and Peter Sarsgaard play tortured artists in love in Christopher Hampton's pared-down translation of Chekhov's classic. Thomas' fully realized performance as Arkadina embraces the character's arrogance and self-absorption, but also her insecurity and need to be loved. The play loses some of the original language's luster, but makes up for it with an honest naturalism that helps highlight questions about mortality, self-worth, and the complicated relationships between the characters. Ian Rickson's direction brings out subtle performances from all his actors; it's only fitting that a play about actors and artists boasts such a fine cast.
