Drag balls aren't all glamour and vogueing, as playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney illustrates in his raucous new show Wig Out! The colorful story moves through a day in the life of drag house the House of Light, as it prepares for a last-minute competitive ball hosted by a rival operation. McCraney is an up-and-coming playwright whose sharp, lyrical voice can sound at once modern and classic. Some advice: if you want to give yourself a pre-show crash course on drag culture, consider renting the fascinating documentary Paris is Burning, which was an inspiration for the play.
