Film Ashes of Time Redux

Ashes of Time may have been an instant wuxia classic when it was released in 1994, but Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai was never fully pleased with his adaptation of the novel The Eagle-Shooting Heroes, despite the wide swath its earnest experimentalism cut internationally. So, he rescored and recut it to create Ashes of Time Redux. The resulting story of two warriors and their broken hearts coheres more than its predecessor did, though its concrete plot remains largely irrelevant. What matters instead is its ruddy colors, its slow, swelling rush of action and emotion, and the lingering sense that love never bends to linear time.
