Art Jean Dubuffet: The Hourloupe Cycle
-
- Jean Dubuffet, A maquette of Welcome Parade, Courtesy PaceWildenstein
Before he was a sculptor, Jean Dubuffet sickened Parisians by making impasto oil paintings in a rough style he called "art brut" (which involved mixing his paint with dirt). His inclination toward the third dimension didn't fully materialize until 1962, with Dubuffet's Hourloupe cycle — familiar sectional sculptures in black, white, red, yellow, and blue that are currently on view at PaceWildenstein. Also included in the exhibition: Dubuffet's Welcome Parade, which was originally designed in conjunction with I.M. Pei to stand in the East Wing of the National Gallery. The project was canceled due to financial troubles and remained unrealized until now, 23 years after the artist's death.
