More Flavor: Benefit Mending Bee for Change: Fundraiser for Obama

In 2004 a team of young patriots began assembling the largest handmade flag in Brooklyn (an unconfirmed, but quite plausible record), unfurling to 129 feet in length and 65 feet in width. The purpose behind the project varies from day to day, but, simply put: "America is a good idea." At 8:30pm this evening, the project's organizers lead a small parade from Union Square to Brooklyn Bridge Park, where the flag serves as a venue for a smattering of live acts at 10pm. Donations to the Obama campaign also help fund the grand ole flag's completion. (It's still missing 48 stars.) If you can't make it tonight, bring a thimble to Saturday's mending session in Prospect Park, or donate online by buying a star.

– Joel Withrow

Note:

The flag will be displayed on the lawn of Prospect Park on Saturday, October 11, starting at noon. Bring a picnic lunch and a flashlight for a game of nighttime tag.
