Art The Chadwicks: The Genretron

In 17th-century Holland, art enthusiasts from the taverns of Delft to the aristocratic households of the Hague spoke highly of the Chadwicks. The British family was Europe's foremost appreciator of Dutch painting, favoring the work of Meindert Hobbema, Jacob van Ruisdael, and Jan van Goyen. Or at least that's the premise behind the work of conservator Jimbo Blachly and poet Lytle Shaw, who fashion themselves part of the esteemed clan in top hats and tails. Their latest piece, The Genretron, is a panoramic model — complete with windmills and hay stacks — which lets viewers immerse themselves in a lowlands landscape. It's a shining example of the brilliant absurdity produced by New York's decentralized art world.
