George Lewis is a musician, composer, and professor whose visionary work — both musical and literary — has mapped the terrain of experimental music for nearly four decades. A member of Chicago's groundbreaking Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) since 1971, Lewis recently wrote an exhaustive chronicle of the movement entitled A Power Stronger Than Itself. This afternoon, the Kitchen hosts a panel discussion and book-signing celebrating the publication. Expect to hear reflections on jazz and the Windy City from the likes of Amina Claudine Myers and Matana Roberts — as well as Lewis' notoriously infectious belly laugh.
