Weird Tales, which describes itself as "the original magazine of the unique, fantastic, and bizarre," published science-fiction giants such as H.P. Lovecraft and Ray Bradbury. This evening's event celebrates the periodical's 85th anniversary and features a reading from Weird Tales favorite Jeffrey Ford. His latest novel, The Portrait of Mrs. Charbuque, tells the story of a 19th-century painter paid to portray the mysterious titular figure, whom he's permitted to speak to only through a screen. The book chronicles his maddening rambles through turn-of-the-century New York City as his desire to see Mrs. Charbuque's face becomes an obsession. Ann VanderMeer and Stephen H. Segal, Weird Tales' fiction editor and creative director, respectively, also read.
