Trajal Harrell's previous work has drawn on such disparate sources as literary fiction and runway theatricality to explore heady concepts about dance performance and postmodern culture. His latest inspiration is Olivier Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of the Time," a piece written while Messiaen was imprisoned during WWII and first performed for the composer's fellow prisoners and their German guards. Harrell juxtaposes Messiaen's mystical, elegant music with a quartet of moving bodies, a sampling of pop sounds, and video imagery. This creates what Harrell describes as a reframed "hoochie-koochie show" that questions whether it's possible to be sincere in a time of pervasive irony.
