The very existence of a Madonna-directed feature has had cinephiles agog for months. Which Madonna would direct this film? Sexy Madonna? Euro Madonna? Blond Ambition Madonna? Or, most terrifyingly, Kabbalah Madonna? The answer, bizarrely, is all of the above. This story of three London flatmates — a brandy-swilling Ukrainian would-be pop singer (Gogol Bordello's Eugene Hutz); a stripping, would-be ballerina; and a drugstore clerk/would-be African missionary — takes its cues from Godard and Madonna's early venture Desperately Seeking Susan, with a hefty dose of spiritual earnestness thrown in for good measure. Filth and Wisdom may be labored and overzealous at times, but like the woman at its helm, its charm is undeniable.
