Streamers, part of David Rabe's Vietnam trilogy, is war theatre of the most absurd. The Roundabout's chilling revival reveals that Rabe's 1976 play is neither timely nor outdated, but a symbolic observation of a situation and nation about to go AWOL. The medic-turned-playwright convincingly demonstrates that four soldiers (Hale Appleman, Ato Essandoh, Brad Fleischer, and J.D. Williams) awaiting deployment have far bigger battles to wage in 1965 than the one in Asia. Director Scott Ellis does a commendable job keeping the confined action, rotating monologues, and army cliché dialogue both surprising and shocking. All of Rabe's ideas come together in the standout performances of John Sharian and Larry Clarke as drunken officers inspiring nothing but ridicule.
