Playwright Beau Willimon served on the staff of many political campaigns — including Howard Dean's 2004 presidential bid — and his knowledge gives us an insider's perspective on how elections are won in his taut new political thriller, Farragut North. Set weeks before the Iowa caucus, the play focuses on an ambitious young press secretary spinning his way to the top. He's on the verge of winning this all-important state for his candidate when he finds out he's just a pawn in a much larger operation. The twists and turns that follow are a little predictable, as is an affair with a teenage intern, but Doug Hughes' direction keeps the action moving and scene changes are punctuated with fast-paced CNN-like graphics. If you miss the play, you can catch a big-screen version soon, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
