Note: Kabir Carter performs live in the gallery Saturday, November 1.
In the '60s, art critic Michael Fried claimed theatre was profoundly hostile to visual art. Curators Franklin Evans and Paul David Young mock his thesis, featuring work that deliberately employs plot, character development, identity, conflict, destruction, and the overcoming of obstacles. Jack Smith invites gallerygoers to perform with "quirky handbills." Jim Nutt experiments with a fractured and reconfigured face that reveals multiple personalities and conflicting emotions. Kabir Carter's sound installation Shared Frequencies allows the audience to fuse with other listeners — just as Fried feared, to participate in the "feedback loop" of theatre. Trajal Harrell Dance Style perform at the opening, "leaving the residue of their performance with the exhibit."
