The catchy psych-pop ditties of Brooklyn's Crystal Stilts could have been recorded in 1966 outside a 13th Floor Elevators show. Of course there's a little more to it than that: the Stilts make subtle references to fifty years of rock music, combining the vocal stylings of Ian Curtis and the aesthetics of post-punk and noise with an undeniable ear for pop. Their self-titled debut EP, like their upcoming full-length, seems an oddly accidental companion piece to the Magnetic Fields' gorgeous Distortion, a record full of similarly catchy melodies and sonically subterranean production. Don't miss the brittle jangle-punk of Brooklyn heroes Cause Co-Motion!, whose awkward anthems get the kids dancing in spastic ecstasy.
