Finally freed of the 1989 casting of Madonna, David Mamet's full-throttle assault on Hollywood's penchant for putting profit before product is finally a true ensemble piece. Karen, the ambiguous "player," is now adeptly portrayed by Mad Men's Elizabeth Moss. Raúl Esparza adds the role of producer Charlie Fox to his impressive stage credits — his turns in works by Stephen Sondheim and Harold Pinter prepared him well to deliver Mamet-speak. Emmy winner Jeremy Piven plays another Hollywood sleazebag, but can't be accused of coasting — producer Bobby Gould isn't nearly as lovable as Entourage's Ari. And Piven's strong performance does nothing to alter that perception; he stays resolutely on book, as do his co-stars.
