English actress Kristin Scott Thomas possesses a bristly elegance that has always restricted her options in English-language films. So it makes sense that she's finally found her footing as a French film actress, most recently — and most spectacularly — in I've Loved You So Long, a movie keen to expose the limitations of biological ties. As Juliette, a woman just released from a prison conviction for killing her young son, Thomas summons a brittle hostility that only barely masks a grim shame her family cannot bear to acknowledge. Elsa Zylberstein also shines as her sister Léa, striving desperately to support her sister while still watching her own small children like a hawk.
