A Place to Bury Strangers redraft early post-punk, smearing Joy Division's blueprints with dark globs of post-grunge aggression. The band's self-titled debut smashes Sonic Youth against the sweet echo of the Jesus and Mary Chain, conjuring deep, dissonant sheets of static. Pitchfork-anointed hot new things Crystal Antlers, meanwhile, take a free-form, orchestral approach, layering sizzling rockers with trippy, space-obsessed interludes.
