92nd St Y says…

John Ashbery has a penchant for confounding critics, but that's done little to detract from his fame. The poet has received every conceivable accolade, but still retains the iconoclastic rockstar status enjoyed by members of the New York School in the '60s. He was once the State Poet of New York, but now holds the curious title of poet laureate of mtvU. Those dubious of an 81-year-old's fitness for that post should know that Ashbery's verse — which combines the high-toned and the lowbrow, the crystalline and cryptic — hasn't lost its bite over the years. Tonight, he reads in celebration of the first volume of his Collected Poems, forthcoming from the Library of America.
