For the Jewish kids who came of age in New York's tenements — mostly children of immigrants — playing sports meant shooting hoops. From the '20s through the early '50s, Jews enjoyed a starring role in professional basketball, chalking up milestones such as scoring the NBA's premiere points. This new documentary, The First Basket, traces the social forces that have helped the sport rule our inner cities, and sheds light on a little-known chapter in Jewish-American history.
