Famed British director Peter Brook helms this well-staged parable from Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov. A co-presentation by New York Theatre Workshop and Theatre for a New Audience, The Grand Inquisitor, set in 15th-century Seville, ponders the intersection of power, politics, and religion via an encounter between Christ (Jake Smith) and the head of the Inquisition (Brook veteran Bruce Myers). This spare production — which is essentially a tour-de-force monologue by Myers — delivers a resounding critique of the old Church while pushing questions of what constitutes true morality to the fore.
