His astonishingly thorough annotations to Stoker's 1897 masterpiece accept the author's contention that the story is rooted in historical fact. The resulting text is a political, historical, stylistic, and literary examination that includes everything from private viewings of original texts to first-hand accounts of Transylvanian cemeteries.
