The West Village may have the parade, but over on the east side, Theater for the New City gathers its own crowd of artists and extroverts during its annual costume ball. Burlesque shows, vaudeville numbers, live music, and fortune-telling — not to mention a Wiccan psychic, an aura reader, and a throwing of the I Ching — keep revelers entertained as they sample bites from local restaurants. The food also helps attendees fuel up for the costume contest, which boasts categories such as "Most Bo-Toxic," "Most Spammed," and "Most Organic."
