In an age when classical-music instruction is often forgone in favor of experiments in GarageBand, Remington prove that skill still matters in music-making. Bassist Mike Thurber is a Juilliard grad, while composer/guitarist Ross Mintzer and drummer Greg Evans were educated at the Manhattan School of Music. This high-level training is evident in Remington's strong bass lines, intriguing harmonies, and perfectly executed percussion. The band's sound recalls early Strokes — if Julian Casablancas had allowed TV on the Radio to commandeer the vocals and drums. Meanwhile, the Giving Tree are a local act that donates all of its earnings to charity. Tonight's show at Sullivan Hall is a victory for music students and do-gooders, nationwide.
