The banlieues — the French version of inner cities — have been known as sites of social turbulence over the past few years. But what rarely gets broadcast beyond the projects is the boundary-pushing art surging from these streets. The Cultural Services of the French Embassy and Trace magazine seek to change all that with I Kiffe NY, a three-week festival of music, dance, film, and discussion. The lineup includes R&B duo Les Nubians, French dance companies Accrorap and Pockemon Crew, and a slew of rising film directors, each of whom possesses the full-on passion behind the French slang word kiffe.
