It's taken 13 years for Sarah Kane's extraordinarily controversial play Blasted to make it to New York, but Soho Rep's production makes up for the lost time. A psychologically troubled playwright, Kane took her own life at 28, but her plays' visceral power continue to captivate audiences who are used to all kinds of shock and awe. As directed by Sarah Benson, Blasted is a psychological nightmare of sorts, using startling imagery (aided by one of the year's most phenomenal stage designs) to chronicle a private affair gone awry, only to be interrupted by an even more violent public destruction. The play features unprecedented graphic violence and gore, and is not for the faint-hearted, but audiences with strong stomachs will be rewarded with an extraordinarily cathartic theatrical experience befitting our troubled times.
