This new uptown reading series gets off to an auspicious start with readings from Lawrence Shainberg and Anne Landsman. Shainberg's latest, Crust, is an in-depth satire of academia, 2.0isms (just check out the cover), and authorly intent. It's a masterful lampooning, centered around, uhm, boogers. We imagine it to be only more entertaining when read aloud. Anne Landsman, whose debut novel, The Devil's Chimney, garnered a PEN/Hemingway nom, published The Rowing Lesson this time last year. It's a dense but rewarding (and somewhat autobiographical) look at a daughter's relationship with her dying father in South Africa.
