The dark economic times spurred by Wall Street and the new political landscape serve as the perfect backdrop for Billy Elliot, a sentimental musical about hard times and the need for change. Stephen Daldry directs the stage version of his indie-fave 2000 film about Billy, the determined son of a miner, and his dream of becoming a ballet dancer. Initially, the boy's dreams are deemed irrelevant amidst one of the biggest workers' strikes in British history, and dismissed as effete by his uber-masculine father and brother. This tidy musical delivers enjoyable, emotion-laden numbers: Elton John's music is satisfactory, but it's Peter Darling's inspired choreography for the main character (played by three talented alternating tweens) that makes a powerful case for Billy Elliot's success.
