September 23's New Republic reported on Vladimir Putin's implementation of a standardized (ahem, censored) history textbook for high schoolers. But no matter how sharp the former KGB boss' editing skills are, he cannot erase Anna Akhmatova. The poetess personified and spoke for the millions who suffered and died during Stalin's Great Purge and World War II. Director Helga Landauer incorporates artistic and official archival footage into Akhmatova's story, and the participation of the poet's confidant and biographer Anatoly Naiman creates a fuller portrait than the gory details usually delivered by tour guides and professors. Anna Akhmatova was a tragic figure, but the publication and translation of her poetry will outlast any regime. Take note of that, Mr. Putin.
