In a film about that favorite of French topics — what's to be done with the family legacy (including, naturally, the country manse) — the always-formidable Catherine Deneuve stars as the matriarch of a three-generation, duly eccentric clan, who has just discovered she has a life-threatening illness. The family (including writer/director Arnaud Desplechin's wonderful staples Mathieu Amalric and Emmanuelle Devos) rushes together for a once-in-a-lifetime noel to determine if any of their bone marrow can save her, and all kinds of blood is shed and shared. A Christmas Tale is sprawling, hyper-philosophical, melodramatic, and wildly scored: in short, all the best that Desplechin has to offer, which is quite a lot.
